The evaluation of machine translation (MT) systems is as old as MT itself. Despite its tradition it has become a neglected issue. But since machine translation systems for PCs have a strong presence on the market, potential users of MT systems have a vital interest in information about their performance and the quality of the translation output. The present volume brings together a number of contributions presented at the Workshop on Machine Translation Evaluation at the 4th Conference on Natural Language Processing - KONVENS-98 - at the University of Bonn. The attention of this volume is focused on the linguistic evaluation of six commercially available MT systems. The results of the evaluation which concentrates on specific linguistic phenomena are described in several papers of the book. Apart from the evaluation itself a variety of viewpoints discussed by MT developers, researchers as well as MT users is documented in this volume. The authors who are confirmed experts in the domain are: Kirsten Falkedal, Margaret King, Judith Klein, Sabine Lehmann, Klaus Netter, and Tillmann Wegst, Jutta Marx, Stephan Mehl, Britta Heidemann, and Martin Volk, Rita Nübel, Uta Seewald-Heeg, Ulrike Ulrich, and Simone Wagner.
